Lonnie Corant Jaman Shuka Rashid Lynn, better known to us as Common, is one of my fav artists. You all know I can associate with those trying to uplift the black race on principle! but his music is good too. I like the fact that he is so versatile-he is actually a musician that CAN act.
I remember hearing this album for the first time and thinking to myself- Erykah must have done him WRRROOONG!! cos hes lost his mind.. ( this was released after he had brroken up with Erykah Badu)
As stated before, I like DARK chocolate usually, but as boxer Bernard Hopkins (B-Hop) once said, its like peaches in a jar, the longer you leave them the sweeter they get. Getting better as he is getting older.

I can genuinley say that I love this dude for his creative mind. The fact that he is a few sandwhiches short of a picnic, really doesnt come into it. The way he dresses, the things that he says- the way he conducts himself, the fact that he is a man of principle, he called his son Seven. I think he is amazing. Enough words.

Truth be told I like my men with a bit more meat on them, but what he lacks in stature he more than makes up for in talent. An excellent actor and musician.
Here is a link to a medley, so you can feel his flow!
Enjoy.

This was a special year for me. I was in my last year of Uni, fresh faced 21 year old, about to have my first child and move out of home. It was all happening this year. each of these albums has a special place in my heart. Isnt it funny how music brings back vivid memories? My hubby (boyfriend at the time) was a BIG hip hop head so I know ALL these albums. I remember him having them all on vinyl- seems like an eternity ago! How quickly the world changes.
The crazy thing is that a few of these artists are no longer with us. Death does not discriminate, when its your time, its your time.
Of all these albums my favourite one by far is Aquemini by OutKast. I loooooooove me some Outkast anyway (I am all for stuff that uplifts the Black race and all- although in the past I have been known to whine my backside to 'battyrider' and the like!) Alas I am older now and trying to stop my almost teenage daughter from delving into such mysogenistic music- the battle is me against MTV Base.
Anyhoo this album was amazing to me. At that time of my life it helped me to deal with the haters, got me to realise its not about what others think- and that there is a time in your life that you have to make your own decisions and live your own life. It touched my soul. Truely.
What music touches your soul and why?
I am nodding along to 'Skew it on the barb-b' now. I have every intention of digging out the cd when I finish this post. What happened to the real music? I am not talking anout the good old Soul and rare groove which for me is in a league of its own-but real hip-hop and rap. I cannot be dealing with the jing bang of today. I am forever cussing my oldest for the nonsense she listens to....OMG I sound like my mother!!!
Nod your head to this.....

Unfortunately Nate dogg passed away this week at the age of 41. It seems that death doesnt discriminate... no matter what age you are when its your time to go.......
May he rest in peace.
There are many videos on youtube, many of them put together as tribute. This is classic Gfunk with Daz Dillinger.

I was up cleaning this morning and I came accros one of my Omar CD's. I love it when you hear something you love for the first time in ages. I think I remember him from his first commercial track "Theres nothing like this". But I continued to follow him. To this day he is one of the best live perfromers on the planet in my opinion. His very first album 'Music' captivated me. I originally bought it on tape, then had to buy it again as eventually it busted!

Omar Lye-Fook was born in London, but grew up in Kent. He is the founder of what is called Nu-classic Neo British Soul. A title well deserved. He is a classically trained musisian and plays Trumpet, Piano and percussion. His last album was released in 2006- but he has been doing the circuits- I regularly see that he is perfroming at the Jazz Cafe in London for example. I hope he comes back soon- we are in need of some PROPER music -not any of the current Jing-bang that I hear coming from my daughters room
There is no vid here its just pics- But this is one of my favourite Omar tunes- I can sing it ALLLLLLLLLLday long.
Enjoy!

Even though Marsha is British, I still feel like we get everything second over here. I think she is based in the US now- and I suppose thats where the money is as far as the music industry is concerned. Anywhoo I am feeeeeeling this track. Her voice is amazing- just remember Floetry- and her song writing skills are awesome also. Most noteably she wrote Butterflies for Michael Jackson-to this day I still prefer her version (youtube it) even though MJ's was hot.
As far as I can remember she has always donned a natural(ISH) head of hair, but in her last vid she forrayed with a straight look. The natural hair media was all abuzz with disgust that she would have done this (chuckle- we have to live and let live people!) but I am glad to say the fro is back here.
What say you about this? are we too criticle of our own? is it for us to comment?
I perosnally am a live and let live sort of girl- I dont like to be told anything by anyone and consequently I keep stuff like that to myself (and this blog)
Back to the track though! isnt this deep? and why a b-ball player?

Sad news that 'Uncle Greg' passed away last night. Its a great shame, he was only 59. Apparently he had lung Cancer. As we know, Cancer does not discriminate, you can be caught regardless of colour, wealth, religion, gender etc.
Here is perhaps his most famous tune Night Nurse. My mum used to play this album ALL the time. I have great memories of this.
An obituary of the man who released over 500 albums can be found here
Gregory Isaacs, one of the few remaining lover’s rock forefathers who was often referred to as “Cool Ruler,” has died at the age of 59. Copeland Forbes, Isaacs’ manager said the singer died today at his London home. Even though Isaacs had been diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago, he continued performing as recent as a couple of weeks before his untimely departure.
Gregory Isaac’s wife Linda said Isaacs was
“well-loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed.”
He was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1951 and began recording early on in his life during his teenage years, producing numerous albums. Gregory’s melodiously smooth voice combined well with the primarily romantic songs and he soon was associated with the well known form of the mellow “Lovers Rock” style of reggae. During the mid-1970s, ballads like Love is Overdue, Tear Drops and All I Have Is Love were major hits.
Later that decade he teamed up with the Jamaican production duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (Sly & Robbie) for several hit songs including Soon Forward and What A Feeling. After hearing the news today, Dunbar said,
“Gregory’s voice and writing ability was wicked. He was one of those soulful singers you could sit and listen to for hours,”
Internationally, Gregory Isaacs became best known for the title song from his 1982 album Night Nurse, a club favourite which later became a hit for Simply Red.

I have loved CeeLo's music for a long time. I am a huge Dungeon Family fan and OutKast are my boys- but there is something about this guys haunting voice and his creativity that dazzles me. My husband calls him an 'Oddjob' and that is absolutly right- how else could he create music so different from thr rest of the rubbish we hear everyday?
He was born Thomas De Carlo Calloway in 1975. He was first part of the Goodie Mob, and more recently Gnarls Barkley.
His current single is an excellent example of his differentness!!
clearly not to be played at work- its not the radio version, but how catchy is this??
I love it, love it, love it! His first two solo albums were not massive in terms of sales, but if you ever get the chance- they are well worth the listen. I actually had to recently re-purchase both albums as my CD's were worn out.
Enjoy

Tupac would have been 39 today had he lived.
All I can think about is how great he would have been now. {What a waste} He was not perfect, I think he tried his best to do good.Pac hit the right spots with me. I loved his honesty and at times apolegetic ignorance.
I still miss him..
This was one of my fave tunes- it was on the 'Above The Rim' soundtrack. It makes it really hard for me to appreciate the BULL%$£* being churned out by todays so called 'rappers' In fact it makes me sick. Every now and again I have to pull out the Pac mix tapes or cd's to remind me of the real

I first of all have to thank my Girl Sensibly Stupid over at stupiddopegalaxy for introducing me to these guys.
I am now hooked and they have both been on rotation in my car. It has been my 'clean the house' music for that last few weeks. I am soooooo sick of comercial rubbish, its great to listen to some REAL music every now and again.
YahZarah used to be a back up singer for Erykah Badu. She was born and raised in Washington DC. In 2000-01 she took the name YahZarah which means "Queen Mother is the brightest star".

Did someone say beautiful!?!?

YahZarah has released two albums: Hear Me (2001) and Blackstar (2003) and EP The Prelude (2008)
The Ballad of Purple St. James (2010) Has just been released.

Click here to listen to a taster of her latest album.

The Foreign Exchange. Wow is all I can say. Although the last album, is 2 years old it is still fantastic (imo) I am eagerly awaiting the next album. I will keep you posted. The FE are Phonte and Nicolay originally from The Netherlands. They met via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, "Connected," was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ's such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica

Their sophomore album, "Leave It All Behind" (2008) found The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay becoming a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. On the strength of their exhilarating live show and several nationally programmed music videos, "Leave It All Behind" became the group's most successful album to date, culminating in a Grammy-nomination for the album's first single, "Daykeeper".
